Although located in Cary, the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve provides and preserves vegetation more associated with western North Carolina. Extremely unusual this far south of the Appalachians, the Hemlock trees and various other plants located on the cool north-facing bluffs are believed to be left over from the last ice age period. The preserve is home to over 150 acres of plant life and over 2 miles of nature trails displaying the area’s native flora and fauna, as well as special programs to help students understand and appreciate nature. Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve lies southwest of Raleigh adjacent to Lochmere Golf Club.
